The reason why I chose the banana as the subject matter for my final essay

First of all, it seemed very interesting. I could not realize when I heard that the banana is in danger and there is no cure for it at present. Furthermore, the existing method, breeding, has severe difficulty to solve the problem: the difficulty to reproduce the banana because of its polyploidy. However, as I continue searching about it, I felt that the banana might be able to escape from the crisis using the genomic engineering, so called GMO.

Based on genomic information by decoded sequence and comparing it with genomes of other cultivars, researchers will be able to the specific defect of the Cavendish toward the tropical race 4. As well as the possibility for the solution, I also thought about the cause why the normal Cavendish (i.e. the Cavendish which has been sold all over the world) is susceptible to the tropical race 4.

It might be the price instead of the superior marketability. By chance, the ones which have less immunity to the tropical race 4 are suitable for the mass production and long-distance transportation. On the other hand, the environmental change by shifting it for mass production in the banana plantation all around the world might arouse the mutation which brings immune defect to the tropical race 4.
