Research on Genomics

What is genomics?

Genome is a set of genes that belong to an organism.

A living thing consists of various substances such as water, lipids, non-/metallic inorganics, and proteins. Unless a protein is exogenous, it’s synthesized from a gene in our nucleus. A gene is a unit of information that encodes a certain protein. So made proteins interact with the substances, mentioned above, that govern an organism’s metabolism. These proteins can regulate other genes as well. Then we can say ‘expression of single gene can affect the atmosphere of proteome metabolism in an organism’s body and genome metabolism. Genomics is a study of listing genes and to explore how they work in an organism.

Meanwhile genetics is a study of how genes look like and what the molecular basis of genes is, genomics finds what kind of genes are out there and how they interact, saying, in the aspect of its totality. It’s possible through genomics to find features shared among species due to the shared genes. Also the very basic characteristics of life in this planet (Chirag Shah et al., 2010)[1] –if expanded, in this universe. On the other hand, it could be used to determine the origin of species.

 The origin/history of genomics

After Darwin and Mendel suggested the inheritance of phenomenal feature of life, the molecule was found, gene. And such term –ome started to be told among scientist to refer to the totality of the objects and –omics for the study of it. Therefore genomics means a study of the total entity of gene set. Genomics draws maps of genes that lie in several species.

Experimental methods to explore genomic world have been developed to reach single-nucleotide resolution. And thanks to the presence of computers big data set can be handled to see the totality.

The future of genomics and how we engineer genomes?

Like many other biological studies do, genomics could yield understanding on diseases. Consequences of the changes in genome or physiological conditions can be simulated to test application of such medicines or treatment.

 The difference from other omics

The only difference is the object. Principles are same.
