Proteomics

1. What is proteome?

The proteome is the entire set of proteins expressed by a genome, cell, tissue, or organism at a certain time

It is the set of expressed proteins in a given type of cell or organism, at a given time, under defined conditions

Proteins + Genome = Proteome

(Cellular proteome in a particular cell type + Viral proteome in a virus = Complete proteome)

Marc Wilkins used the term proteome to describe the entire complement of proteins expressed by a genome, cell, tissue or organism.

Knowledge of the proteome requires

1. the sequences of proteins

2. the structure of the proteins

3. the funcional interaction between the proteins

Expereiments to study proteome

1. 2D gel electrophoresis - to separate proteins by charge and size

2. Mass spectrometry
(Peptide mass fingerprinting ? / Tandem mass spectrometry ?)
