Prediction of Bioinformatics Grade

Seongwan Park

Introduction

A grade is usually given by professor based on an exam score. It can make students restricted to their exam score. A new standard of grading is needed to expand student’s ideas. This assay provides new criterion about grading system.

Method

Grade should be given based on how much knowledge a student gets from the class. To quantify the amount of learning, criteria are set. The criteria are composed of interest part, memory part, and concentration part.

Interest part measures the enjoyment of class that a student feels. If a student have interested in the class, he can broad his thought. It might be related to grade.

Memory part measures how much knowledge the student remembers. The more knowledge that student can remember, the more the student studies. It is directly related to grade.

Concentration part analyzes the student’s concentration on the classes. If he focuses hard on the classes, he can get more knowledge.

To measure these three criteria, three questions are set (Table 1).

Question

1

Interest part

Do I love the subject?

2

Memory part

How much do I remember?

3

Concentration part

How much do I focus on classes?

<Table 1. Questions of each criterion>

Each question is scored up to 10 point. Interest part is scored with 5 point of attendance and 5 point which represent the number of thinking about the classes. Each 20% of attendance gives 1 point. Also each time I think about the subject gives 1 point of interest part. Memory part is scored by the ratio of the number of memorable chapter to the number of entire chapter multiplied by 10.

Concentration part is scored by the percentage of class which I concentrate. 10% of class gives 1 point. If 47% of class I concentrate, 5 point is given.

With these questions, I collect data from 2015 spring and fall semester (Figure 1).

<Figure 1. Grade score graph of 2015 spring and fall semesters>

The data is collected from 10 major subjects. The relation can be detected with 0.7265 of  value. The grade of bioinformatics can be determined with this standard.

Results

In bioinformatics, I attend all of the classes. Also, I think about the classes three times: two times when I make R code about microarray and SVM, one time when I study transcriptomics. Therefore, 8 point is given in interest part.

I make chapter list of bioinformatics. 8 of 11 chapters I can memorable (Table 2). It gives 7.27 point in memory part.

Finally, I concentrate 10 of 12 classes of bioinformatics. It is scored with 9 point. Totally, I get 24.27 point in bioinfromatics.

Conclusion

24.27 directs 3.98 of grade in the graph (from y=0.1127x+1.2455). The grade of bioinformatics should be A0.
