Essay about why Korean students are quite in class

From Biolecture.org

I generally agree that Korean students are quite in class and usually don’t have a question. But I suggest that it is not a serious problem based on 3 reasons.

First of all, it does not restrict to Korean students. This article is very segregate and it feels so like racism. Students, whose will is the only motivation for academic studies have a right to answer or not to answer to the questions. Moreover, they decide to be whether in a passive state or active state based on their only motivation to do. If the topic of or the course itself has not brought any interest, then students don’t have to be active because he will not go that field or way for future career. Life is short for doing all the things. Moreover, it is not a problem only of Korean student. When I was in Sabanci university in Turkey, Istanbul for exchange student, the class atmosphere was same with Korea or even worse. They didn’t raise up question well and didn’t answer to professor, too. When I was in University of Arizona for CESL, there were lots of students from all over the world like Brazil, China, Columbia, Mexico and Japan. All of the students have passive attitude regardless their nationality. I think it is because their motivation for that class is more oriented to making global network or hanging out instead of doing academic writing.

Second, the student may be in a passive way and don’t answer because they are thinking and need time to prepare. Nowadays, the classes are too fast and force student acts very fast to the motivation. But they need time to arrange their thought and to answer even though it is different by person by person for sure.

Third, the Korean culture has affected to the society a lot which has a virtue for being patient and being passive even in the academic field and in addition to that they are exposed to the vertical culture throughout their whole life. However, they are under the change of paradigm for sure. In a cultural respect, even though the dramatic change is difficult but as time goes by with accumulation of effort of individual, the academic culture in class will be absolutely changed.
