Essay about genomics

Genomics in life

Genomics is a discipline in genetics that applies recombinant DNA, DNA sequencing methods, and bioinformatics to sequence, assemble, and analyze the function and structure of genomes (the complete set of DNA within a single cell of an organism). This defined in wikipedia. Yes, as it is, it is study about genomes. Genomes are blend of gene and chromosome. They are total of genes in cells or organisms. With these genomes, we can get lots of information. We are human. So I will cover largely human genomes. I want to write essay about how these genomes information is adapted in our life.

A genome is an organism’s complete set of DNA, including all of its genes. Each genome contains all of the information needed to build and maintain that organism. In humans, a copy of the entire genome—more than 3 billion DNA base pairs—is contained in all cells that have a nucleus. With these genomes, people do human project. The work of the Human Genome Project has allowed researchers to begin to understand the blueprint for building a person. As researchers learn more about the functions of genes and proteins, this knowledge will have a major impact in the fields of medicine, biotechnology, and the life sciences.

Firstly, genomics affect the medicine field. Via genomics, we can get the information of human genomes. In other words, we can also know the mutation and abnormal situation of DNA. So, the cause of disease can be known. As a result, the disease can be cured by developing medicines. Actually, many genetists cooperate with pharmacists.

Secondly, genomics affects the biotechnology. This is prevalent. For example, I have done genotyping with mouse. To use mouse in experiments, firstly, I must know the genotypes of mouse to use specific experiment. Through genotyping, the technique cutting tail of mouse and get through lysis proess and neutralize and then PCR and gel loading, I can know the genotypes about mouse in gel with using uv machine. Comparing to ladder marker, I can know the size of DNA and presence of DNA what I want to know. In this way, the base of genomics can be used in trivial experiments in laboratories.

Thridly, genomics, of course, affects life science. For example, I am life science student whose major is BIO. I took the class Bioinformatics which is related to Genomics. Under professor Dougu Nam, we run the program R studio. With this program, we put the genes we found on GEO, and then analyzed the genes. Through these process, we could know the what major factors causes the colon cancer, common cancer in people. In life science, genomics is important because this is a clue to know the cause of disease. Through this, there can be made cure for disease.

In addition to this, genomis are used in many aspects. In other words, without genomics, above things can not be imagined. Genomics is very important to affect our lifes.
