Essay about Silent Korean Scientists

  Recently, Nature publishing group pointed out the reason why Korean scientists has no novel prize. They indicated that the 5 major reasons about this phenomenon.

① Command and discipline : No active discussion

② Enterprise leading : Cannot do basic science research

③ Following current trend : No long term goal

④ Brain draining : Leaving of talented person

⑤ Resolving the problem by money : insufficient research article.

  Through those reasons may affect the Korean researchers cannot win the novel prize. However, I guess first reason is most reasonable than other reasons. Korean students, even in UNIST students(including me) are very silent and passive in class. Even though instructor gives chance to raise the question about the topic, but students keep quiet. Honestly, I don’t care about this issue much before seeing the video clip of Korean journalists and this article.

Then, why Korean students exceptionally silent in class? I think the education of this country is not really suitable for active discussion. The politician and officers in ministry of education keep changing the education method for a long time, however, the cramming system of education isn’t still disappeared. In past, Korea was very poor and they need to grow their economy competitiveness to survive in rapidly changing world situation. Therefore, they need to educate the people to do their own productive jobs in limited time, so they were obliged to adapt cramming system of education. The cramming system of education cannot make the creative thinking and environment of discussion, because they make student to stop thinking and memorize the concepts.

It was fitting on the chasing R&D system to make a lot of money, but now it is not feasible for creating the new ideas. I want to suggest that we need to change the system of education and environment of research area. We need to increase the ability of discussion, for that make chance for active discussion in research area and even in elementary education to raise creativity.

  Finally, I changed the mind of thinking about active participation in class. As professor said, the passive attitude in class is wasting of precious time, because I’ll couldn’t get any knowledge from that class unless I actively participated. Maybe, in the near future, we can change ourselves.
