As mentioned in the article, the genome analysis is the starting point of the disease study and the targeted cure. Then, why the government kept the restriction for private genome analysis until today? That’s because the analysis is not so perfect. The algorithm is developing and the analysis is getting more accurate as the data increases. But, it is about human body. When I read the book named ‘The $1000 Genome’, I could not but agreed to the government’s restriction on the private genome analysis. There was a case that the different companies used different algorithms and the result was dramatically changed. For example, let’s assume SNP A and B are responsible for disease C. The algorithm for company X weighs low property on SNP A and high property on SNP B. Then the company Y weighs high property on SNP A and low property on SNP B. If I have SNP A and not SNP B and request an analysis to both company, the result would be extremely different. I may get results that I may have 10 times much higher probability to have disease C from the company X and only 1.5 times higher probability from the company Y. If the restriction is abolished and lots of people take the analysis, they would get various result from the various companies. Then, they will think they would have high or low probability of certain disease and take it to the doctors to cure according to this result which can be dramatically changed depending on the company. Is it right for the government to let people have certain thought about their body which can be totally wrong? They can get unnecessary surgery or try not to get vital surgery due to the analysis result. This is very dangerous and this danger is not allowed since the analysis is about human body. We need hundreds of experiments and several years to verify that one medicine works and can control its danger. The genome analysis is the same. There must be a lot more time and verifications to provide it to the privates. I hope to get the analysis and targeted therapy, but also hope that the analysis is solid.
