 Epigenetics

Definition : Heritable changes in gene activity and expression that occur without alteration in DNA sequence

Epigenetic  modifications are crucial for packaging and interpreting the genome

Two well-known epigenetic modifications

  1. Chemical modification to the cytosine residues of DNA (DNA methylation)
  2. Histone modification

The patterns of epigenetic modifications  can serve as

  1. Epigenetic markers to represent gene activity and expression
  2. Epigenetic markers to represent chromatin state
