Week 3 homework-CSH

1) Define Genomics your own way after doing research on what genomes are and how we study.

gene + ome(whole group) + ics(study)

Simpliy it is study about whole group of gene, how it express in specific condition, and the effect.

2) What is the origin of genomics?

Darwin & Mendel noticed the existence of gene and inheritance. and established basic of genetics.

Next, Watson & Crick discovered DNA structure in 1953.

Later, Fred Sanger succeeded to sequence first DNA-genome. and started to study about genome in 1977.

3) History of genomics?

In 1976, Walter Fiers completed viral RNA-genome (Bacteriophage MS2)

In 1977, Fred Sanger completed the first DNA-genome sequencing.

In 1995, first bacterial-genome, first eukaryotic genome were sequenced.

In 1996, first archaea-genome was sequenced.

In 2003, finally Human Genome Project completed.

4) The future of genomics?

In the future, genome sequencing will be faster and cheaper.

If genome sequencing technology is supplied enough, next step will be connection with medical area.

In this step, genomics will study for personalized medicine or pre-diagnosis of severe disease.

5) What is the relationship with other omics?

When gene is transcripted, it become mRNA and if mRNA is translated, it finally become protein.

First part will be covered by genomics, Second part will be covered by transcriptomics, and Last part will be covered by proteomics.

Our final goal is not just to know our DNA list but how it is expressed and affect. So these three omics are all connected so much.

6) How can we engineer genomes?

There are fancy technologies such as Crispr-Cas9 and Cre-Lox system. By using these technologies, we can edit genome and even on-off it only when we want with many expression control technologies.
