As my personal experience, it is quite natural Korean student to be shy. From really early age of study, Korean students are forced to choose only correct answer, and even in many time if we don’t give proper answer, we become a laughing stock publically or we got punished for really long time. Also in Korea, there is national identity called equalism (평균주의). Because we’ve learned that abnormal and different thing is bad, and if other people (especially order or higher person) do that, we must follow them by Confucianism culture. Of course, there could be positive effect but obviously it hurt each creativity. Also in 1970s~80s, Korea achieved amazingly faster and powerful growth socially and economically. So it becomes standard to do something faster and faster. We become impatient, and chasing nice result only. I think that is the reason Korean doesn’t invest to basic science and dose only clinical or cancer things.

It might be really hard to change this nationality. It would take long time. Still many Korean students feel tired to care about whether they are doing ‘normal’ and following hierarchy. Before trying to solve this problem, we should know that this is not just student’s problem.
