1. What is proteome/proteomics?

Proteome is the total complete set of proteins which are expressed in a cell at any given point in time and under a given set of growth conditions. For example, when cell in dangerous situation, such as diseased cell, their proteome will be different from the normal cell's proteome. Becasue in terms of situation, they will express different gene by different stimulus from extra or intracellular level.

Proteomics is the study of the proteome using methodologies capable of analyzing large numvers of proteins simultaneously.

There are three types of proteomics. First, descriptive proteomics which are categorize each protein, and second, functional proteomics which figure out the dynamic state of the proteome. Last, interaciton proteomics which are revealing the protein-protein interactions to show the physiological meaning of protein interaction in cell.

2. Relationship between genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics.

In the process of expressing protein, the genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics are highly connected. Genomics can be the resource of biological information. Transcriptomics can be the machinery of making feasible proteins from biological information. Proteomics is final destination for cellular activity. That is trivial that all the genome cannot be the proteome, because there are non-coding informations are exist. Below figure shows that proteome region is much smaller than genome or transcriptome, because of expression machinery has highly regulated manner to express the protein from genes.

3. How to get information about proteomics?

Electrophoresis

2-D electrophoresis (Isoelectric focusing + SDS-PAGE)

Mass spectrometry

Chip technologies
