Bioinformatics 1st semester 2015

What I learned in this class is...

 Biology is questions.

 Biology learning procedure

What are good motivations for an active participation in classes and research?

Principles of Bioinformatics

What is Biology?

What is Bioinformatics?

 Bioinformatics is biology.

Biology is a study to aim to understand what life is. The essence of life is information processing. Therefore, bioinformatics, the study of life forms using informatics methods is the key of life science.

 The technical definition:

Bioinformatics is a discipline of science that analyses, seeks understanding and models the whole life as an information processing phenomenon utilizing energy with methods from philosophy, mathmatics and computer science using measurable biological experimental data.

Bioprogramming

What is bioprogramming?

http://biolecture.org/index.php/Bioprogramming

 Definition

Bioprogramming is all the programming activities for analyzing biological data.

Genomics

 Definition

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genomics

Genomics is a discipline in genetics that applies recombinant DNA, DNA sequencing methods, and bioinformatics to sequence, assemble, and analyze the function and structure of genomes (the complete set of DNA within a single cell of an organism).

Transcriptomics

 What is transcriptomics?

 Relationship between genomics and transcriptomics

 What are mRNAs?

 How to measure RNA expression?

 Relationship between Transcriptome and Proteome.

 What is a UTR?

 What is ncRNA ?

 What is poly A ?

 Definition

   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcriptomics#Applications

Transcriptomics is a study that analyses, seeks understanding, and models the whole life by utilizing transcriptome.

 What is transcriptome?

Transcriptome is the set of all RNA molecules

Proteomics

 What is proteome?

Relationship between genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomcs?

 Definition

  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proteomics

Epigenomics

 Definition

Canceromics and Geromics

What is cancer?

What is the origin of cancer?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_M5pKs1ILxI

Why do we have cancer?

How do we detect cancer?

How do we cure cancer?

What is aging?

Why do we get old?

How do we measure biological age?

The problem of cancer and aging.

  Definition

Canceromics is the study of cancer which have questions about cancer, seeks understanding from measurable data, models cancer, and find the answer.

Geromics is the study of aging. Its nickname is gerontology. Geromics aims to study the whole changing process in biological organisms, especially aging.

Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potetial to invade or spread to other parts of the body.
